How does MyNetwork, work?

← News & Stuff — Started 28 Jan, 2010

Hmm, I check back every week to see how my Tracker 1.2 and MyNetwork development is going and I finally noticed this:

Tomm Wrote:It's impossible to assign the MyNetwork template set to a theme,

and had a little panic - do you mean we are stuck with the default theme?

Nope.

The template set only contains customised templates for MyNetwork modules and features - so it's pointless being able to assign them to a theme! This way, it allows for custom templates to be installed, edited, reverted etc. without having to add them to the MyBB template system.

Your themes are safe. Shy

I see - well, I am eagerly awaiting MyTracker 1.2. The only reason I'm not using myTracker 1.02 is that I want the attachment functionality. But I really liked the way MyTracker picked up my site theme. Will MyTracker 1.2 also do that?

In a sense, no it won't pickup your forum's theme as well as before. It's a slightly different style simply because of how much stuff is in it - using MyBB's trows and tcats would have made it far too bulky and disorganised, but I think I've made it as clean and as simply as possible!

Of course, you're free and able to edit the templates through the MyNetwork system and stylesheets to match your theme. There's nothing stopping you creating your own custom theme that does follow your forum too, and it wouldn't be too hard to do.

This time round, it closely follows Redmine. Essentially, it's the most powerful bug tracking software available for any forum system.

That looks really sharp and crisp - would make a great forum theme in itself - any plans for that? Like could we use the css in 1.4?

There really isn't any plans for a forum theme based on it, but most of MyNetwork's look and feel follows that sort of style.

Both MyNetwork and Tracker are 1.4/1.6 compatible, so you can just alter the stylesheet to attach it globally and away you go. Smile

A further update to MyNetwork - something that I had to take out of the early versions of Core - was the ability to check for updates.

As you can see from this image, the interface is really simple. Tick means we're OK - red is bad. Clicking on the name of the out-of-date feature or the red error image takes you to the release thread so the user can read how to upgrade.

The whole process works through AJAX, and stored in the cache for easy retrieval in the future - instead of MyBB's little-bit-annoying update every time you visit the version check.

The results in the screenshot are from the internal testing I have everyone doing. Hopefully some of those things will be out and about for Christmas time...

I hope we see some of the actual "networking" features that we were told about over a year ago soon ... Sad

I admit MyNetwork is the wrong name for what's been released so far, but hopefully the problems that stopped the Profile System from working properly have been fixed - and things will be ready soon.

Maybe I should rename MyNetwork to something else? And then have the Profile System back to the original name?
